Earthdawn - Who Really Kaers?
Crystal Spell Box
Crystal spell boxes are small boxes made of crystal and metal. The sides, top and bottom are all solid pieces of crystal, with the seams between the peices made of precious metals, most often silver or gold. The boxes are not designed to be opened. The crystal used is usually deep amber in color, though clear or blackened crystal is used occasionally. A crystal spell box measures roughly 8 inches long by 5 inches wide by 3 inches high. Crystal spell boxes were designed by the great mage Masym. The spell boxes capture spells cast by enemies and store them for later release. Whenever the box contains the maximum number of spells, a spell currently in the box must be released before another spell can be captured. When a box contains a spell, it radiates a faint glow, which intensifies as more spells are captured within it.
From the scholars of Bartertown, you have learned that this item has 7 Thread Ranks available. A maximum of 2 threads can be woven into the item (how many individuals can weave threads into it). The Spell Box has 2 deeds associated with it that are required to complete in order to unlock higher effects at a couple of the higher ranks. The first Key Knowledge you must find is the name of the box, which the scholars have provided to you as they recognized the item right away – it is a Crystal Spell Box.

Only the first 4 ranks are revealed from the Item History that was done on the item -

Thread Rank One
Key Knowledge: The wielder must learn the box’s Name.
Effect: The wielder can capture a spell that is being cast by making a Spellcasting Test against the caster’s Spellcasting Test result (this requires the wielder to act when the spell is being cast, taking a Reserved Action; it also prevents him from capturing his own spells, as he cannot take two Standard Actions in the same round). If successful, the wielder has captured the spell in the box. The box can hold 1 spell and the held spell can be released by making a Spellcasting Test as normal (no threads need be woven, and the spell is considered to be cast from a Matrix); the wilder determines the spell’s effect as if he had cast it himself. Once released, the spell is gone; a new spell may be captured.
I realized that I wasn’t supposed to give Rank 2+ information until you actually weave a thread to the rank before it. So you won’t see what Rank 2 will do until you weave a thread to Rank 1.
